Dub Colossus are and award winning world music band, presenting Ethiocentric dub reggae, funk and jazz grooves.
I joined the band as a sample and percussion player in 2009.
Other band members and members have included musicians Nick 'Count Dubulah' Page well known from Transglobal Underground, Nick Van Gelder from Jamiroquai, Winston Blisset
from Massive Attack, Mykaell Riley from Steele Pulse, and the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra, Dr Das from Asian Dub Foundation
and the horn section from Dizzi Rascal's live band.
The original Dub Colossus line up recorded three albums for Peter Gabriel's Real World record label.
The first two albums featured five fabulous musicians from Addis Ababa; Ethiopian pop star Tsedenia Gabremarkos,
traditional Azmari singer Sintayehu 'Mimi' Zenebe, Azmari folk singer and kraa player Teremage Woretaw, university lecturer and
Ethiopia's Got Talent panelist, saxophonist Feleke Hailu, and Samual Yirga Mituku, who has recorded his own solo album for Real World,
Guzo,on which I also performed. See videos below. Sammy's album was produced by Nick Page and features songs by Nicolette and vocals
from The Creole Choir of Cuba. Other musicians include jazz drummer Clark Tracey and several members of Dub Colossus.
In 2013, Dub Colossus won the Songlines Magazine award for Best Cross-Cultural Collaboration. The Dub Colossus Dub Band performed at the awards
ceremony at the Barbican on December 13th, alongside the other winners, Angelique Kidjo, Mokoomba and Lo'Jo. Bandleader Nick Page was presented
the award by His Excellency, the Ethiopian Ambassador in London, Mr Berhanu Kebede, who said, most accurately, "Nick Page has done a lot for Ethiopian Music."
The third album on Real World, which won the Songlines Magazine award, is entitled
Dub Me Tender; a double album of exquisite dub versions of the
first two albums, and four additional tracks, featuring new members of the group, during what became a transitional stage for the band, now with a UK line up,
The Dub Colossus Dub Band, performing with eleven musicians, including horns and two vocalists; Julie Higgins, and Mykaell Riley.
This line up is currently recording a fourth Dub Colossus album, with some of the recording work being done at my
studio in London. A new EP is available on band camp accompanied by a video by my old mate
Phil Smith .
Another periodical incarnation of the band is the Dub Colossus Sound System, with whom I performed in a four piece line up recently in Paris and London.
In 2012 it performed as a seven piece at the Jaipour literary festival.
I was not on this tour but it is a superb Dub Colossus show. I did play at Womadelaide in Australia with the original line up and at Womad Taranake in New Zealend.
It really has been a fantastic experience working with Dub Colossus who have included only really lovely people and fantastic musicians in the band, so working and
travelling with the grip has been a joy and of course an honour.
I am currently recording new parts for the next album and am looking forward to more international escapades with Dub Colossus in 2014.
